Gardner Renewal Project
Following the award of a £25,000 development grant and a delivery grant of almost £220,000 by Historic Environment Scotland and the National Lottery Heritage Fund in June 2018, Brechin’s Gardner Memorial Church commissioned a number of contracts for both building repairs and heritage promotion in connection with its Repair & Renewal Project.
The Gardner’s Repair & Renewal Project aims to secure the future of this ‘A’ listed building within the Brechin Conservation Area and the heart of the town for the benefit of the whole community.
The project involves the execution of essential conservation work together with the provision of both physical and digital interpretive material and access to the building, enabling visitors to better understand its unique detail and the wider community to participate in its future.
The church was designed in the American Romanesque / Arts and Crafts style by Sir John James Burnet, a contemporary of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and Mr. Niall Murphy, Deputy Director of the Glasgow Heritage Trust, will give a talk on the architect and his work at 6pm on the evening of Wednesday 23rd October.
Conservation work was undertaken by Graeme W. Cheyne (Builders) Ltd. of Aberdeen under the supervision of Conservation Architects James F. Stephen of Glamis and the John Duguid Partnership of Dundee.
The building contains a number of unique features illustrated by artist Steve Pardue from Hexham and a number of ornate Tynecastle Tapestry doors recently restored by the Scottish Conservation Studio, all of which are to be highlighted digitally on a new website prepared locally by Carnoustie Creative.
A completion exhibition displaying various aspects of the church’s architecture, repairs, history and heritage was run from 22nd October 2019 to 1st November 2019.
