A Service of Union celebrating the Brechin Gardner Memorial and Farnell Churches Union was held in Farnell Church on Sunday 16th February.  After the service in the Farnell village WRI hall the celebrations continued as it was Adriaan’s first anniversary as our Minister in Charge.  Soup, tea, coffee and lots of cake were served and over 80 people stayed back to enjoy.  Here’s to many more happy years with Adriaan at the helm.

What a wonderful cake!  it was also delicious.  Well done to all you served, baked and made soup.

We held a collection at our Christmas Eve family Service for The Attic in Brechin.  Adriaan visited the Attic to meet the youngsters and helpers to hand over the £200 raised.

Adriaan had this to say :  The Attic in Brechin is an exceptional space making a positive impact on the lives of high school students in the community. With a warm and inviting atmosphere, it provides a safe haven for young people to relax, socialize, and engage in fun activities. In my opinion, the Attic stands as a testament to the importance of nurturing youth and creating meaningful connections within the community.

Fantastic meal served for our Burns’ Lunch in the Gardner Hall.  Adriaan did very well with the Selkirk Grace and everyone enjoyed David the piper and Dina’s address to the haggis.

Great community spirit at our annual bbq august 2024 in the church hall.  Well done to both our churches hospitality teams for pulling off such a great event.  Thanks to all who attended.

Beautiful afternoon in lovely setting for a summer fete at Farnell.  Monies for good causes, fun had by all.

We were delighted to be part of the community Brechin Bike & Trike Fest on 6th July 2024.  We helped serve bacon rolls at Brechin Castle for the riders before the ride out and also had a water or wine tombola at the Brechin public park where the ride out ended.  Fun for all the family

Another fabulous Big Lunch was held in the St. Ninians Square.  The sun shone and we were entertained by David the piper, Brechin City Band, Maisondieu School Choir and our own Gardner Steel Pan Drums.  Joe Wishart was our compere and Cathedral Boxing Club gave you the chance to try our their gloves and pads.  Usual races it was hard to know who enjoyed them more, the children or the adults.  The first two photos are the official press photographer, copyright to Wallace Ferrier.

Some photos from Easter Celebrations at Farnell Church

We held a lovely Easter Bonnet Lunch in the Gardner Hall on 30th March 2024.  We were delighted to announce Mrs Margaret Ritchie as the winner of our Easter Bonnet competition.  A three course lunch was provided along with the chance for you to decorate your own hard boiled egg ready to roll at this family friendly event.

Adriaan’s Induction Service was held in the Gardner Memorial Church on Tuesday 13th February.

A lovely special service enjoyed by many who attended and available to catch up on our youtube channel.

We said goodbye to Malcolm Rooney who has been our locum for nearly 6 years.  David Adams our session Clerk  presented him with his farewell gifts on behalf of Brechin Gardner & Farnell Churches. Peter George also presented him with a wee friend to remind him of his time with us.

Well done to all who helped and attended our  Burns’ Lunch in the Gardner Hall.  Dina addressed the haggis in her own unique way.

Lovely Christmas Lunch was served in the Gardner Church Hall on friday 8th December.  Well done to all the ladies who helped prepare and serve this wonderful meal. Very much enjoyed by all who attended.

The sun shone for the Summer Fete at Glebe House (old farnell manse).  Beautiful setting for a garden party. Strawberries with cream, scones, shortbread and tea/coffee on offer along with a plant sale and lots of games for the young and old.  All monies for good causes.

A great evening of music and poetry, enjoyed by all.  Many thanks to the Lydian Singers and hope to see you again to perform in our Church.   The Lydian Singers is a Ladies Choir based in Dundee.  The choir has been going for almost 40 years.  At present they have 34 members and rehearse in Menzieshill Community Hub on a Wednesday evening.  Their conductor and accompanist was Michael Ellacott, a well known musician from Perth.  Their repertoire is varied, covering music from the shows to religious and choral pieces

Well done to all at Farnell for their annual coffee evening & plant sale. A great amount raised.

On Saturday and Sunday 13^th & 14^th May The Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland visited the Gardner Memorial and Farnell Churches as part of their 2023 Spring Study Tour around buildings of significance in Angus or Forfarshire.

About 40 members of the AHSoS are seen here in Brechin’s Gardner Memorial Church described by Simon Green, the tour leader, as the most elaborate of Sir John James Burnet’s series of low friendly churches. A wonderful mixture of Baronial, Romanesque, Scots Late Gothic and Arts and Crafts with a magnificent roof and sculptural decoration by William Vickers. The wonderfully light interior is a celebration of ‘Presbyterian Ecclesiology’.

Big Coronation Lunch in may 2023 was to be held in St. Ninian’s Square as usual but due to rainy weather all that week the decision was made to use our Church Hall.  Great time had by all who attended. Music was by Brechin City Band, our own Steel pan drummers and David our Piper.  Cathedral Boxing Club put on a exhibition with some of their young boxers on our stage.  Note copyright for first 4 photos  Wallace Ferrier official press photographer.

2022 saw the return of our Big Lunch.  This year was the Brechin Big Jubilee Lunch to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

We now have a blue plaque for our Architect Sir John James Burnet

Niall Murphy, Deputy Director of the Glasgow Heritage Trust gave a talk on the architect of the Gardner Memorial Church,  Sir John James Burnet during our October Celebrations to showcase our  completed essential repairs.

The Big Lunch was well attended and although we had to stop early due to a prolonged downpour we all enjoyed the first few hours,  a picnic lunch was the order of the day and we were entertained by the Brechin Brass Band and our own Gardner Steel Pan Band.  Check out our photographs below.

The Big Community Walk took place from Edinburgh to Brechin.  Visiting and promoting community organisations and the Big Lunch as they travelled.  The group reached Brechin on Friday the 31st of May and met with some of our Big Lunch Organisers (in our church hall due to bad weather) to help promote our Big Lunch in St. Ninian’s Square on 30tht June 2019.  The walkers enjoyed tea and cake and were entertained by our Steel Pan Band.
